Instrument with a bad smell: What can you do?

Some weeks ago I received a very interesting email from Murdo, a subscriber of mine, asking what he could do to eliminate a bad smell from his new instrument, bought on the internet.

This is actually something that happens very often: especially in times like these, where you buy pretty much everything online, you forget to consider that even instrument come with a particular smell, sometimes not so pleasurable.
In particular, Murdo had trouble with the strong cigarette smell coming from his doublebass.
